histroy of the computers and internet

Lecture 2
Lecture 2 discusses the selective history of computing and the Internet. In beginning of the lecture focuses on the history of computer. Computer is an instrument that processes the information. The first commercial computer was produced by IBM Corporation in the 1950s; however, this computer was impractical due to its large size and costs. Earlier computer suffered from lack of proper language, Bill Gates was the first person to come up with the language called BASIC and since then he has revolutionised the way computer operates. Then it explains the different operating systems that are used as a platform to run various programs in computer and discusses the role of various corporations in developing the operating systems that mad us capable to use computer this days.

Internet is described as the sum of interconnected computer hardware and the software that runs it, the web is a particular application of the internet that is very easy to use. Cyberspace is described as sum of users’ imaginations as they use the internet. As per the US Federal Networking Council the internet is defined as the global information system that is logically linked together by Internet Protocol (IP) and able to support communications by means of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocols suite and provides a high level of service and accessibility to either public or private users. It is crucial to differentiate between internet and web because web is just one part of the broader internet, which includes much more than web.

Internet application includes electronic mail known as “Email”, which is a virtual mail system that sends documents from one sender to one or many receivers. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a system that allows user to directly download or upload files from another computer to one’s computer with minimal requirement for compatibility. The more popular application includes Internet Relay Chat, which is real time chat system that allows people to type and see each other in real time. In modern day, internet is being used for instant messaging, P2P file sharing, Pod casting, VoIP and social networking sites. Internet has become integral part of the way we communicate.
